PS Plus Premium free trial lets you play Stray (and more) for free

Posted on July 19, 2022July 19, 2022 by Admin

Tempted by PS Plus Premium, but turned down by the monthly cost? It now has a 7-day free trial for new subscribers to try.

If you’re curious about what the newly revamped PS Plus offers, you can try it for free now. Sony is currently offering a week-long trial so you don’t have to spend $17.99 / £13.49. But keep in mind that you will only be eligible for the free trial if you are a brand new PS Plus subscriber who has never paid for the service in the past.

It also extends to the Australian equivalent – PS Plus Deluxe – which usually costs AU$21.95. This isn’t immediately obvious on the Australian PS Plus website, but the fine print on the the US website (opens in new tab) states that the test is for “PlayStation Plus Extra, Deluxe or Premium”.

The trial will give you free rein on what’s available in PS Plus Premium. The library includes some of the best PS5 games and a robust selection of high-end PS4 titles. Retro fans can also check out the growing collection of PS1, PS2 and PSP games.

And completing the collection is a list of PS3 titles, although these can only be streamed, not downloaded. Unfortunately, however, the PS3 library is not yet available in Australia. We hope that the region will have access to these games at a later date.

Catching a Tramp

Best of all, the new PS Plus Premium free trial will let you try the newly released (and critically acclaimed) Stray at no extra cost. This creative cyberpunk adventure sees you playing as an adorable kitty, doing your best to survive in a dangerous futuristic city.

If you’ve been looking forward to Stray and haven’t tried PS Plus yet, this free trial practically lets you kill two rabbits with one…um…cat.

And as the old PS Plus service has morphed into the new one, unfortunately you won’t be eligible for the free trial if you subscribe to PS Plus before the June revamp.

The new PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers are still young, having only been released last month. A rather scattered approach has been taken to the games included in its library – especially with the older PS Now cloud-based PS3 library looking unceremoniously.

It’s not as well curated as Xbox Game Pass, but we’re already seeing some high-profile games make their way to the new PS Plus. This month, for example, Final Fantasy 7 Remake (and its Intergrade expansion) and Marvel’s Avengers arrive on the service alongside Stray. And for retro fans, older generation games should come to PS Plus at a steady pace.

As a result, the gap between the new PS Plus and the old PS Plus is already widening. And we expect the service to continue to add value like this for years to come.
