Major spoilers for the His Dark Materials TV series and novels follow.
The first trailer for His Dark Materials season 3 has been released – and it confirms the return of Lin Manuel Miranda’s Lee Scoresby.
The HBO Max fantasy drama series, which was last seen on our screens in December 2020, has also been given an official release date alongside its teaser. will arrive in Monday, December 5th on HBO Max in the US, with season three getting a two-episode premiere on that date, as revealed at New York Comic-Con 2022. No official release date has been revealed for its UK or international release.
As pleasing as it is to finally know when the final season of His Dark Materials will air, it’s the return of Miranda’s Lee Scoresby that is sure to be the most shocking news for those who haven’t read the book series. Check out the trailer below:

In a press release, HBO revealed the official synopsis for the third season. “In the final chapter of this epic fantasy series, Lyra (Dafne Keen), the prophesied child, and Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer, must travel to a dark place from which no one has ever returned,” he says. “As their father’s great war against the Authority approaches, they will learn that saving the worlds comes at a terrible price.”
As fans of Philip Pullman’s iconic fantasy novel series – and the TV adaptation – will remember, Scoresby died while holding back the forces of the Magisterium in season two, which was a live-action adaptation of Pullman’s The Subtle Knife. . Of course, this isn’t the last time we see Scoresby in the books. He appears in the land of the dead in The Amber Spyglass, which Lyra and Will visit in an attempt to find Roger.
Even so, Miranda’s return as Scoresby is sure to be an unexpected moment for anyone who’s only seen the His Dark Materials TV series. Would her revelation have been even more poignant if HBO Max hadn’t screwed it up here? Maybe so, but the streamer needs to arouse interest in the series’ return. As we mentioned, it’s been two years since the last season aired, so something of this nature was needed to pique the public’s interest again.
Away from the news that Miranda’s Scoresby is back, the His Dark Materials season 3 teaser looks suitably foreboding and grim. We received our first live-action look at the depiction of angels on the show, with still images revealed by HBO’s social media channels on September 27 (opens in new tab).

In the meantime, given what happens in The Amber Spyglass, we know we’ll see more of James McAvoy’s Lord Asriel. The trailer later puts him front and center in Season 3’s plot, with Asriel calling on the witches, Lyra’s mother and ex-girlfriend Marisa Coulter and other allies to join him in the fight against the Authority.
That doesn’t mean we won’t see Lyra, Pan and Will in season three. The trio play just as much – if not bigger – roles in the final book and the season’s narrative, so expect them to play major roles in how the overarching story unfolds. Unfortunately, we don’t get a glimpse of the titular Amber Spyglass, or any indication of the realm that Doctor Mary Malone travels to at the end of season two. Fans of the Pullman novels will know what goes on there, but we’ll avoid spoilers here.
Like its predecessor, His Dark Materials season three will consist of eight episodes. New installments will arrive on HBO Max every week in two-episode batches starting December 5th, with the final two entries of the entire series debuting on December 26th.
